Watch out for these pairs

These three letters are easy to mix up when you’re reading:

  • ه vs ح — both start words, but ه is a soft “h” and ح is a deeper, throaty sound. Compare هيا (hayya, let’s go) with حياة (hayaat, life).
  • ن vs و — in small or fast handwriting, the dot on ن can get lost and look like و. Remember: ن always has a dot above.
  • و in different roles — و can be a consonant “w” in ورد (ward, rose) or a long vowel “oo” in نور (noor, light). The shape is the same; the sound depends on the word.

Practice tip

Read these pairs out loud, pausing between each one to notice the difference:

  • نور (noor, light) — و is a long vowel here
  • ورد (ward, rose) — و is a consonant here
  • هيا (hayya, let’s go) — soft h
  • حياة (hayaat, life) — deep h
  • هو (huwa, he) — و is a consonant
  • هواء (hawaa’, air) — و is a consonant

Test yourself

Cover the answer first — say it out loud, then reveal and compare.
