The Arabic Letter Zay (ز) — How to Pronounce & Write

Tap to listen

zay

Harakat

Zay (ز) is the ninth letter of the Arabic alphabet and carries the voiced alveolar fricative sound — the buzzing “z” you hear in the English word “zoo.” It shares its curved shape with Raa (ر) but is distinguished by a single dot above. Zay is a non-connector letter, so it never joins the letter that follows it. Learning Zay will unlock dozens of everyday Arabic words.

How to pronounce it

SoundIPAEnglish approximation
ز/z/“z” in “zoo” or “zebra”
  • Tip: Place your tongue in the same position as for the English “s” (near the alveolar ridge), but engage your vocal cords so they vibrate. You should feel a buzzing sensation in your throat and mouth. If you pinch your nose and say “zzz,” the sound should be blocked — that confirms it is voiced and oral.
  • Common mistake: Some learners devoice the sound, turning it into an “s.” Make sure your vocal cords are vibrating. A quick test: touch your throat while saying “zzz” — you should feel vibration. If you feel none, you are producing “s” instead of “z.”

Zay (ز) and Raa (ر) are mirror images in sound but identical in shape — the dot is the only visual difference. In handwriting and some fonts, the dot can be hard to see, so context is your best friend.

Key rule: Like Raa, Zay is a non-connector. It connects to the letter on its right but never to the letter on its left. The dot above must always be present — omitting it changes the letter to Raa, which changes the meaning entirely.

Practice tip

  1. Buzz check: Say “zzzz” loudly for 5 seconds. Now say “ssss” for 5 seconds. Alternate between them: “zzz — sss — zzz — sss.” This trains your ears and vocal cords to distinguish the voiced from voiceless pair.
  2. Minimal pairs: Practice these side by side:
    • زَمَن (zaman — time) vs. سَمَن (saman — sesame)
    • زَيْت (zayt — oil) vs. سَيْت (sayt — hunting, if pronounced)
  3. Word chain: Build a chain where each word starts with Zay: زَوْجزَهْرَةزِيَادَةزَمِيلزَمَن
  4. Handwriting focus: Write the word “زَوْج” ten times. Make sure the dot is clearly above the curve and the descending tail is smooth and tapered.

Frequently asked questions

Is zay pronounced like English z?

Yes — a straightforward voiced buzz, identical to the z in zoo. It is one of the easiest Arabic sounds for English speakers.

Does zay connect to the next letter?

No. Like raa, it is a non-connector, so the dot-topped curve stands alone in any position.

What is the zay in azan or adhan?

The call to prayer is written أذان with dhaal, not zay — a common mix-up. Zay words include zayt (oil) and zaman (time).
