Demographics

Muslims in Cyprus

19,534

people recorded as Muslim in the 2021 census (Republic of Cyprus coverage)

923,381

people in the census table for the population enumerated by religion

~2.1%

share of that census table — not a whole-island Muslim population figure

The Statistical Service of Cyprus published 2021 census results that include religion among the recorded characteristics of the population. In the table for the population enumerated by religion, 19,534 people were recorded as Muslim, out of 923,381 people in the population covered by that table.

These figures concern the population enumerated in the Republic of Cyprus's census coverage, not a complete census of everyone living across the entire island, including the northern area administered separately. The religion question was optional, so the figures should not be treated as a complete measure of every Muslim living on the island.

Cyprus has a Muslim population with varied backgrounds, including people connected to the island's Turkish-Cypriot history and Muslims who have arrived from other countries. The wider community may include people with family roots in the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, Europe and elsewhere.

The page recognises that diversity without implying that every Muslim in Cyprus follows the same customs or level of religious observance.

A closer look

A Diverse Muslim Community

Muslim identity has a longstanding place in Cyprus's history, and Turkish-Cypriot identity, language, cultural background and religious practice are not necessarily identical for every individual. Alongside those communities, foreign workers, students, professionals and other residents bring different languages, nationalities and cultural expectations.

Greek and Turkish are important languages on the island, while English is widely used in international and professional settings. Other languages may be important within particular migrant communities. A marriage-focused service can help people discuss language, culture, location and long-term plans without treating any one of these as an absolute requirement.

City context

Muslim Marriage in Nicosia

Nicosia is the island's divided capital and a significant administrative and employment centre. The Republic of Cyprus government and the Migration Department are based there, which makes the city relevant to readers researching official procedures as well as to Muslims living, studying or working in the capital.

Limassol is an important business and employment centre with an international population. Larnaca is a coastal city and transport hub, while Paphos has an international and expatriate population alongside its local community. No current city-level Muslim population totals are published here.

References to Famagusta, northern Nicosia, Kyrenia and other locations in the north require particular care. The northern part of Cyprus is administered separately in practice, and Republic of Cyprus government services, marriage procedures and immigration permits should not be assumed to apply there automatically.

Law & practice

Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus provides a civil-marriage procedure through the relevant municipal authorities. The Ministry of Interior's published guidance describes a general minimum age of 18, with a limited provision for 16-year-olds who obtain written parental or guardian consent, as well as rules on prohibited family relationships and other impediments.

The normal civil-marriage procedure provides for a notice period of 15 days and a fee of €128. Some applicants, including certain third-country nationals who legally reside in Cyprus, may need a Certificate of No Impediment. Procedures and fees can change, so confirm current requirements with the municipality where you intend to marry.

A nikah is an Islamic marriage ceremony, and its religious meaning and legal effect are separate questions. The Republic of Cyprus Marriage Law includes provisions concerning recognised religious ministers, but a couple intending to rely on a Muslim religious ceremony for legal purposes should confirm directly with the competent marriage authority that the particular officiant and procedure meet the legal requirements.

Cyprus also recognises civil unions, which generally have the same legal effects as marriage except in relation to adoption. A civil union is not an Islamic nikah and should not be presented as a substitute for a religious ceremony when the couple specifically wants an Islamic marriage.

This is general information, not legal advice. Religious ceremonies and legally recognised marriages are not necessarily the same, and the position in the northern part of the island differs. Confirm the applicable requirements with the competent authorities before making plans.

Preferences matter

What Makes Muslim Marriage in Cyprus Different?

Cyprus combines a longstanding Muslim history with contemporary international migration. A prospective spouse may have deep family roots on the island or may have arrived for employment, study or family reasons, so language, nationality and family traditions can vary substantially. Couples also need to clarify whether they want a nikah, a civil marriage or both. Some may prefer:

  • Someone with family roots in Cyprus
  • Someone from a similar cultural or linguistic background
  • Someone who speaks Turkish
  • Someone who speaks Greek
  • Someone who is comfortable in English
  • Someone who is practising
  • Someone who is open to marrying a convert
  • Someone already living in Nicosia
  • Someone living in Limassol, Larnaca or Paphos
  • Someone willing to relocate within Cyprus or internationally

These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. The most useful criteria are religious values, communication, family expectations, lifestyle, work and long-term plans — not nationality alone.

Immigration

Bringing a Spouse to Cyprus

Marriage may be relevant to a residence application, but marriage does not automatically grant a visa, residence permit, permanent residence or citizenship. The outcome depends on the sponsor's status, the applicant's nationality, the type of application and the relevant legal conditions.

The Migration Department has a specific procedure for third-country nationals who are family members of Cypriot citizens. Its published guidance lists an examination period of four months for duly completed applications, although individual cases can take longer or require additional documentation.

Family reunification is a different route when the sponsor is a third-country national already legally residing in Cyprus. The published rules generally require at least two years of legal residence, a residence permit valid for at least one year and a reasonable prospect of acquiring permanent residence, with exceptions for certain categories such as intra-corporate transferees and researchers. The spouse must generally be at least 21 and the marriage must have taken place at least one year before the application.

EU free-movement rules can apply when an EU citizen exercises the right to move to or reside in Cyprus, so the procedure for a non-EU spouse can differ from the domestic family-reunification route.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask before applying.

Is there a Muslim community in Cyprus?
Yes. Cyprus has Muslim communities with different historical, cultural and national backgrounds. The Republic of Cyprus's 2021 census recorded 19,534 people as Muslim in the population it covered, but that figure should not be treated as a complete count of Muslims across the whole island.
Where can I find a Muslim spouse in Cyprus?
You can apply to our Muslim marriage matching service and describe the values, background and long-term plans that matter to you. Community connections and introductions through people you trust are other routes, and an online service can help you look beyond your immediate circle.
Can I find a Muslim spouse in Nicosia or Limassol?
Nicosia and Limassol are useful starting points for people searching by location. We do not claim a particular number of members in either city, so it is worth considering whether you would also be open to a partner living elsewhere in Cyprus.
Is a nikah legally recognised in Cyprus?
A nikah is an Islamic marriage ceremony, but its legal effect depends on the applicable law and the circumstances of the ceremony. Do not assume that every nikah automatically creates a legally recognised marriage. Confirm the position with the competent marriage authority before relying on the ceremony for official purposes.
Can foreigners get married in Cyprus?
Foreign nationals may be able to marry through the civil-marriage procedure in the Republic of Cyprus, subject to the applicable eligibility and documentation requirements. Requirements can differ according to nationality and residence status, so contact the relevant municipality before making travel arrangements.
Does marrying a Cypriot citizen automatically give me residence?
No. Marriage may establish eligibility to apply through a family-member route, but the applicant must follow the relevant immigration procedure and meet its conditions. The Migration Department publishes separate guidance for family members of Cypriot citizens.
Can I bring my spouse to Cyprus if I already live there as a foreign resident?
Potentially, but the applicable family-reunification rules depend on your residence status and category. Some sponsors must meet minimum residence and permit-validity requirements, and the general rules for certain third-country sponsors include conditions relating to the marriage's duration and the spouse's age.
Do Muslim couples in Cyprus have to follow the same marriage customs?
No. Personal beliefs, family traditions, languages and cultural expectations vary. Couples should discuss religious practice, family involvement, mahr, financial responsibilities, children and where they intend to live rather than assume that every Muslim family follows the same customs.
